Moosefest UPDATE 09/26/2011

Words from the General, Chris Koll....

The 2011 Moose Fest weekend of October 14-16 is rapidly approaching and this year’s event will feature a significant change: three days of GUARANTEED water on all three sections of the Moose River.

In past years, there were only releases on the Bottom Moose for the Saturday and Sunday of the weekend. Consequently, the drawdown of the Fulton Chain of Lakes was scheduled to provide favorable water conditions foro the Bottom (as well as the upstream Lower and Middle sections) starting on Saturday morning.

However, earlier this year a lightning strike knocked out the generator at the hydro project on the Bottom and the dam will be offline until sometime next year. With the river spilling over the dam at Agers 24/7—no releases are needed—only an appropriate flow in the river.

To provide that flow—the Black River Regulatory District has agreed to start its drawdown a day earlier than usual. That means all three sections of the Moose—the Bottom, Lower and Middle—will have water on Friday as well as the usual Saturday and Sunday!

Because water is available on the Moose—the special release on the nearby Black River will NOT be scheduled in 2011.

Plan your schedule now for a three-day weekend on the Moose!

Note: because the Hydro plant is off-line, water levels cannot be manipulated on the Bottom Moose as they often have been in the past. Whatever is coming down the river is what goes over the dam. That can make for higher (and more challenging) conditions on the Bottom than paddlers have experienced in previous Fest weekends.

However—when the Bottom gets big (over 4’), the Lower becomes a much more viable option so plenty of boating opportunities will be available.

Moosefest 2011 09/14/2011

October 14-16 will be the dates for this years Moose River Fest.

The question is, what is moosefest?

The answer. Nobody knows, unless you have been.

Here's a hint.... kayaking, kayaking, partying, partying. In that order. Each day. Maybe mix that order if your certain crew.

The folks at Mountain Man have sales on everything from dry gear to kayaks, and demo kayaks for cheap.

The river releases, there are sections for every paddler. There is the Class 4/5 Bottom Moose, there is the Lower Moose, Class 4+ ( if the water is up ) and the Middle Moose, Class 3.

There is a King of NY race held this weekend as well!

"I was shooting some photos this past weekend (Labor Day) on the Beaver River, Eagle section. Here's a shot of my friend and Werner Ambassador Chris Morelli skipping over the hole after the big slide. He stayed on line and managed a 4th place finish in the annual Eagle race."

This was a great busy weekend for creeking. The Raquette released saturday and monday, and in the middle, on sunday the Beaver released.

The Moshier section of the Beaver is great, yet it only runs one day a year. This is followed by afternoon laps on the Eagle, which consists of big fun slides.

The king of New York race series was held sunday on the Eagle and Monday on the Raquette.

Overall it was a great weekend. I came in 4th overall in the Eagle race, 1st in creek boat division. And 4th overall in the Raquette race, 1st in retro...even tho i was the only one!

Shout out to those who put on the races this weekend. It was a great time!

Off the the moose...

September is starting off with a bang from Irene. Vermont and southern new york were put into states of emergency. Hopefully families can cope with the damage.

On another, lighter note, the rivers have came up huge in 24 hours. For example the moose rose from only 2 feet, to 8 feet over night. Now it has dropped back down to around 5 feet. A spike like this is rare, but with the volume of rain we got, thats what happens.

Coming up this next weekend, labor day weekend. Is beaverfest. Saturday most "gnarboaters" are headed to the raquette river for a release, followe by sundays Moshier and Eagle release on the Beaver river. Then again on monday Raquette river again. This is a great weekend for paddlers to come together and enjoy the rivers. The last hurrah of the summer for NY.

Following the Beaver, the gauley fest is the weekend of the 17th. This is the largest party of the kayak year. Not to mention the whitewater is great!

After gauley the game plan is to go to Asheville and kayak the green river narrows.

Lets go september!

For all whitewater kayakers, they all know when a hurricane comes up the coast, it can mean the creeks will be up! And lord knows we need it. So hopefully there is not to much damage caused when it hits, but when it comes to NY. PLEASE DUMP ALL THE RAIN YOU GOT ON US!

Peace (and rain)

Busy Summer! 08/17/2011

Well summer has a busy one for me. Alot of raft guiding on the black river, and alot of playboating at hole brothers. With little rain so far the moose river has dropped out for the last few weeks. The rains came back and last night the boys from the black river met myself, and we rallied a great lap down the bottom moose. As work and summer slows, the nights get colder and the creeks start coming up again! So prepare for some upcoming footy. If your bored or want to check out old stuff.....

With the weekend coming to a close, that marked the first of 4 in the King of New York race series. The Black River race spanned over 4 miles of river. The best boats used were touring kayaks. That gave the likes of Justin Beckwith, with a Tsunami 165 the advantage over Matt Young, Speeder and Justin Mcgiver, paddling a Pisca. Other boats ranged from Green Boats, to Dancers, to Corsica's. I used my corsica which is a great downriver boat, but proved very slow in the flat water. I rounded the middle of the pack, beating all the creek boats, and a few long boats. No pictures or video from a busy weekend. But if you were there, you know.
